Choosing & Planning
One of the first things to consider when purchasing a conservatory is, ‘do you need planning permission?’ In most cases, the answer is a resounding ‘no’, but even if consent is required, you do not need to worry. As an Approved Ultraframe Installer, Thermaglaze have the experience and expertise to provide all the advice and assistance you require regarding planning permission and building regulations.
In England & Wales, official permissions are not required as long as your conservatory meets the following criteria:
- Has a roof made of at least 75% transparent or translucent material.
- Has at least 50% glazed walls (i.e. not more than half the wall area is brickwork, masonry or solid panels).
- Has a floor area of no more than 30 square metres.
- Is constructed at ground level.
- Is permanently separated from the rest of the house by an exterior quality and lockable door.
- Has thermostatically controlled heating.
- Is not being attached to a listed building.
- Does not feature sanitary or drainage facilities (i.e. not being used as a kitchen or bathroom).
- Satisfies building regulations with regard to toughened or safety glass.
